What a busy lesson! Firstly the students spoke about different forms of bullying and what it could look like which then led them into a discussion about racism and what values they held personally. The students recognised that they are role models at their school and their behaviour in the playground, and how they deal with difficult situations, is very important. Younger students both hear and see what older students do and imitate this behaviour. Therefore, older students have a great responsibility to lead by example. They need to value themselves and realise they are an important member of their school community. After this wonderful discussion regarding values and attitudes the group worked together to select their individual islands. Ryan lead the group with Brodie allocating the islands and it was amazing to see all 19 of them work together harmoniously. Mrs Booth was loading the islands map into MinecraftEdu during this time. Once they were all in-world there was just time for a group shot before the students, armed with their map, began their search for their island. Once found Mrs Booth teleported over and placed a teleport block on each island which would allow all students to easily visit each other. this is very handy as the school computer graphics cards aren't the best and the world doesn't have great visibility. Again another brilliant lesson and if only we had another hour....
This week the students and Mrs Booth spoke about and discussed in detail the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We looked at Article 13 and 28 and how they affected us. The students also created a Charter for their Minecraft world and rules for classroom behaviour/values. They are as follows: MinecraftEdu Charter:
Class Rules:
We then honed our skills in the tutorial world for the last time as next week we begin designing our bridges and community buildings. The students absolutely love this class and are so engaged in their learning and helping others. It will be brilliant to see where this unit takes them and to hear their thoughts as they reflect back on their learning:) This week my 4/5 enrichment group installed MinecraftEdu onto their computers and logged into the tutorial world. We experimented with the commands and also managed to crash the server when I tried to teleport all the students back to the spawn point! Running it on the oldest computer in the computer lab wasn't the brightest idea but aside from that it hummed along with no lag problems. Students were able to develop skills with movement, building and problem solving the set challenges before they commence their PDHPE project 'Building Bridges' next week. This has been adapted from a PDHPE unit written by Erina Highschool Head Teacher Brendan Jones. He has very kindly given me permission to use this with the students so it will be interesting to see where they take it. The students had a brilliant session today and they all can't wait until next Monday. |
